Trying to absorb all the info, and keeping my goals simple to start. All I’m looking to do is accrue enough points to fly my family of three to Aruba, annually. What would be the best card? I would also like a card that gives good rewards for groceries and online shopping as we don’t eat out a lot. Loving all this info and excited to join this community!

    Hi Jay,
First off, what airport would you be flying from and what are your approximate point balances currently? That may help us decide what’s the best fit for you.

Besides groceries, what kind (and how much) online shopping are you doing? Business or personal – or both? If business, I’ve become a big fan of the Amex Blue Preferred Biz card for non-bonus spend. It offers 2x points for every dollar up to 50k. I use it for legal filing fees. I use Amex Platinum for flights at 5x for every dollar; and the Amex gold for groceries and dining out. In the last 16 months I’ve received 180k Amex MR points for hitting those 3 cards’ bonuses. I also use the Chase Ink Business Preferred for all other work travel – 3x. For personal non-bonus spend I use the Chase Freedom Unlimited. It is basically 1.5x on all spend – I use at it wherever I know places don’t code as restaurants or groceries – like my local coffee shop. All told, in the last year I’ve accrued 270k+ Amex MR points and 130k Chase UR points. That would certainly get me 3x roundtrips to Aruba (from PHL) in coach, with some to spare for next year’s trip.
