Refundable Airfare for the Eclipse

Refundable Airfare for the Eclipse

  1. Kevin M New Member

I was making plans to fly to see the eclipse from the DC area. The path of totality is well-known, but of course the big variable is the weather. Because the path of totality stretches from coast-to-coast, I am trying to have multiple options, skewed towards places with historically better weather, that I can adjust as the weather reports get more reliable as the day approaches. Hotel availability is low but can still find semi-reasonable options with one to two-day cancellation windows. But for flights, it can be difficult to decide between fully refundable, refundable with a fee, refundable for travel credit and cancellable for a fee award bookings when available (no status to offset fees). I may just have to pick a high-probability location with good repositioning options, but it would be interesting to know what people would do when wanting multiple travel options for the same (popular) date.

Not exactly relevant to refundable airfare but Travis had a post about this today:

Thanks. Southwest seems to be an excellent option and will get me to 4 of the 6 cities where I have hotels booked with their generous refund policy. A little more expensive but not much given the reason for the trip. They don’t go to Lincoln, NE or Columbia, SC so I will have to play those by ear and see what last minute options are available should one of those be the only one with good weather. I certainly won’t give AA, UA or DL $2K per ticket for fully flexible or add $200 per ticket for “flexible” refunds.
