Newbie here – How do I make the most of my points?

Newbie here – How do I make the most of my points?

I am a newbie to the miles/points game and I need advice on how to go about booking a trip to Hawaii.

I have 70,000 Amex Membership Rewards Points and I have $500.00 in American Airlines gift cards. I have an Amex Platinum and an Amex PRG. I have no idea what I am doing when it comes to transferring Amex points to partners or how to do it. I don’t want to mess something up, but I do want to learn and I do need your help and advice on what I should do to get the best deal.

Ideally, we would like to fly out of Las Vegas or Phoenix into Honolulu. I know that we can use the points on Amex travel, but I don’t believe that we can pay with our American Airlines gift cards to cover a good majority of the expenses. Also, from what it looks like this morning for those particular dates (June 20 – June 28), we will be using around 59,700 Amex points for a $597.00 (cheapest ticket) ticket not including taxes and fees.

    Any help is greatly appreciated!!!

@Eitan–there should be no reason why you can’t pay with your AA gift cards if you book your tickets through AA. Another possibility might be to get a BOA Alaska Airlines credit card. The card comes with a companion voucher that is immediately available and allows you to book a second ticket for $121 when you buy a paid ticket on Alaska metal.
