Newark to Hong Kong United – Upgrade

Newark to Hong Kong United – Upgrade

Hello Everyone.

I rewcently bought Newark – HK economy tickets for myself my wife and our what will be at the time of travel 11 month old.

The flight was booked in K class and got a very good deal on them at about 600 usd each.

To upgrade it would cost me 600/leg + 30k miles. I have the miles in a cominatipn of UR and united miles. But do you think it’s worth it. Almost couldn’t believe they charge so much for the upgrade.

Another question. On the UA 777-200 are the bulkhead seats good? Do they all have immovable armrests? As I saw some pictures of ones that the middle armrest would move up which would be helpful travelling with our little one.

Thanks a lot

Just to clarify – you’re upgrading to Premium Economy?

Econ to business.

All the seats in UA business class have immovable arm rests. There’s room between the two seats for a couple of glasses to sit so you have have a beverage but don’t have to have the tray table out. Some of the 777-200s have 4 seats across the middle section so I don’t think you want that – you’d be better off on the side where it’s just the two of you with the child. There might be *marginally* more room in the bulkhead but just a very few inches.

And don’t forget you have to pay the child’s upgrade fare too:
Infants traveling on an adult’s lap on front cabin awards or upgrades must pay 10% of the front cabin fare in applicable markets.
Found that wording here: https://www.united.com/web/en-US/content/travel/specialneeds/infants/default.aspx

Depending on how much that is you might be better off buying the child a seat in advance.

Thanks a lot for that. Especially the 10% piece. More and
More it looks like we will be in economy. That is going to be a long tough trip.

The 777-200 I was referring to the bulkhead in economy not business with the movable armrests. Does anyone know if the middle seat armrest is immovable on both sides

I can’t say from experience, but typically all bulkhead seats have immovable armrests. Seems to be the trade-off for extra legroom….
