My friend and I are planning a trip to Mendoza, Argentina in October 2019. We would like to do a free stopover in Quito, Ecuador on the way home. We both have United miles and I also have Singapore miles and Alaska miles. United allows a free stopover on a RT ticket but I don’t know if it needs to be a star alliance hub. I’m departing Albuquerque and my friend is departing San Antonio and we plan to spend the night in Houston (definitely for the departure and we can also do for the return).
    Here’s what I’m finding:
ABQ to IAH with overnight in Houston
    IAH to PTY
    PTY to MDZ
That part of the trip is fairly easy.
    Coming home:
    MDZ to LIM
LIM to UIO (stopver in Quito)
UIO to IAH to ABQ or coming home through San Salvador to Houston to Albuquerque
Would there be a better routing? Any suggestions?
