Lufthansa First vs. JAL First

Lufthansa First vs. JAL First

  1. Anonymous Guest

    Hi all,

I currently have a trip booked from JFK-HND, with the first segment in AA business class to SFO and the second segment in JAL First onwards to Haneda. The Lufthansa 14-day window will be opening up soon, and I wanted to hear people’s thoughts on these 2 products, and whether it would be worth switching from JAL to Lufthansa if the availability opens up.

I’ve flown a few Asian and ME carriers in first (Korean, Singapore, Etihad, Emirates), but never a western carrier, and for some reason that novelty appeals to me. I’d also love to see the FCT in Frankfurt (wouldn’t consider the change if it routes through Munich).

On balance, it seems most have a preference for JAL over LH, but just curious what people’s thoughts were on the sanity of making such a change. On the plus side, I’d be routing through Europe, which should give me many more hours in first class, not to mention the fact that the flights would depart at hours better designed for sleeping.

    Thanks!

Routing through Europe adds multiple hours of flying to your trip (2,000 miles give or take). But, agree that you’d be in First the whole way, rather than American business then one flight in First.

If you have the miles and the means to cancel your oneworld booking, I’d say go for the switch.

Or, assume you have to get home at some point. Why not take Lufthansa there and Japan home?

LH wins hands down with respect to the lounge experience. In the air, however, it’s JL all the way. JL consistently has excellent catering (including the western choices), Salon champagne, perfect service, a wider first class seat and the most comfortable bedding of any airline. I doubt you’ll be disappointed with either experience (and if your routing will permit flying both, you really should consider it) but my vote is for JL.

I like the suggestion @rickyw made. Choose whichever itinerary maximizes your time at the FCT for the LH segment and fly the other with JAL!
