Korean Air Waitlist

Korean Air Waitlist

  1. SFG

    Lucky (and fellow readers),

My wife and I have an upcoming trip on KE in March 2017 from JFK-ICN-AKL. We were able to confirm 2 seats in F from JFK to ICN but only 1 seat confirmed in F from ICN to AKL. I have a 2nd seat in F wait-listed until December 27th (as far as I can tell from the seat map there are no other passengers holding seats currently). Any recent experience with Korean’s time frames for opening up wait-listed seats? The call center tells me to keep waiting and that I can potentially extend the hold time. Is it possible to ask/petition/beg them to open an additional award seat?

Having the same issue on the way back from ICN-IAD but fortunately have 2 confirmed F seats into JFK as a backup.

hi @SFG, and welcome. I’m not aware of any way to expedite wait list clearance on KE unfortunately. I’d just keep calling in periodically and see if they will initiate a request to their revenue management department. Do you have a J booking or some other backup for the outbound?

  3. Avi

@SFG I’ve been waitlisted for F on Korean for months already, so no good news here…however Korean was able to double-book me with a confirmed seat in J and waitlist the F seat all on the same reservation for the same person with no expiration on the waitlist.

@Gaurav Do you know if the Call center they transfer you to in Malaysia (from the US 800 number) can initiate the request to revenue management? Or do you need to call Korean Air in Korea you think? No one from the call center in Malaysia seemed to be able to do anything with regard to trying to open an additional award seat.

@Avi Yes, we are double booked in J from ICN to AKL in case the 2nd F ticket doesn’t clear. It’s not ideal however since you’re paying F mileage for half the itinerary in J (my amazing wife actually offered to take the J seat and let me sit in F if I wanted – though I would never do that….or would I?) 😀

Hmmm… I’m not aware of US callers routinely getting transferred to Malaysia. Are you calling late and getting re-routed? Or is this happening during US working hours?

Called again today and got someone who seemed to know a little bit more. Essentially said what we assumed in that you just have to wait for the waitlist to clear and they have no way of controlling when the seats open.

He told me that revenue management department does not take requests for opening reward seats. Told me they would just email him back “why are you doing this? You can see there’s a waitlist” which I got a chuckle from. Guess it’s back to the wait and see approach. Fingers crossed.

Just wanted to post a quick data point and update for anyone in the same boat waiting for KE F seats to clear.

My wife had been wait-listed for several months for our return flight ICN-IAD for next month. 25 days out (from the return flight and 13 days before we depart) we received an email letting us know her wait-list had cleared into F.

We are now 10 days from our ICN-AKL segment and her F seat has yet to clear (Currently it appears I have the only seat assigned of the 6 F seats in the 748 cabin). Eagerly hoping/waiting for that second email to arrive.

Keep calling the US Call Center phone number everyday and ask them if the waitlist seat has cleared. Remind them that your departure date is 10, 9, 8, etc. days from now. I have been waitlisted at least 3 times by Korean and the seat usually clears 4-5 days prior to departure. Good luck!

Were you calling the California office at (213)484-1900? I called a few days ago and was told that my wife was able to be put on a “priority” wait-list since her husband (me) has a confirmed ticket in F. We are 5 days out from departure and still showing wait-list on the Korean site.

Did you find calling made any difference?

call 800-438-5000 everyday and ask them the status of the wait listed seat and remind them of your departure date. Ask them when will a decision be made regarding the wait listed seat since you need to finalize your travel plans. I found calling makes a difference. Good luck!

Been checking the app/website daily and calling periodically. Tried calling this morning and got the same line – Just have to wait until something clears – I tried to impress upon them that we leave in 5 days but that didn’t seem to concern the agent. At this point I think we are at the mercy of Korean and their wait-list game. Fingers crossed.

Do you have a plan for if the wait list doesn’t clear?

Maybe changing your F ticket to J so you can fly together?
