J class seats on QF 388/744

J class seats on QF 388/744

    Hi there,

I am a newly-minted AAdvantage EXP from a bunch of business travel last year, based in MEL. I have booked my wife and me on AA72 (SYD-LAX) connecting to MIA in November, then returning from SAN and on AA73 LAX-SYD. We’re currently the only two people on the outbound AA72, and the inbound AA73 I’ll need to reschedule once the booking window opens in a few weeks for next January. We locked in the outbound so I could get us at the top of the waitlist for SWUs.

My wife, for medical reasons, really needs a flat seat for something long-haul, so that she can have a chunk of solid sleep. I am thinking of booking QF flights in J (for which there’s currently availability, as you’ve noted) as a fallback at least for her, which I can cancel if the SWUs clear. I will wait until the current problem of QF rejecting AAdvantage awards is resolved, at any rate. (I can see the QF availability with my QF account but I don’t have sufficient points there.)

So, last time I was on QF long-haul it was in Y+, but the J seats looked a lot like the ones I just used on a QR 77W. I found that (for me, at about 6’2″) they were long enough, but without an ottoman or a foot cavity in the next seat, the extended seat sagged under my legs’ weight and wasn’t as comfortable as I’d hoped. (The QR 388 seat was amazing, though, like CX is and it would appear the AA 77W is.) Is the QF J seat like that, or is it better? (Or is there a way to lock the QR 77W J seat to better support?)

Check this as it’s off the top of my head, bur pretty sure all of the 744s have been refitted to get A380 Y, Y+, and J seats. No F on that aircraft. If there are any unrefitted birds remaining, they’re likely on other less prestigious routes (like SYD-NRT or SYD-HKG).

Thanks for that. I’m not really shooting for first, although if it’s available it might be worth the minor points differential on AAdvantage. Can anyone talk to how the leg support works on the J seats on QF? Or whether there’s a way to improve support on the similar QR seats?

No QF J class has an ottoman. Leg support on new latest product is good enough IMO, though I’m only 5’10”.

    Thanks.
