Is AA Gold worth $400?
Both my wife and I got offers from AA to get upgraded to Gold status for $399, valid until 2/2017. Worth it for people who don’t travel for work and take 3-4 trips a year?
When you travel, do you use award travel or revenue tickets?
From what I know, AA gold is decently valuable. A brief list of benefits:
25% more miles on revenue tickets
Priority Check In
1 Bag Free checkin
Preferred seat selection – Last 24 hours
Close in award ticket fee waiver
If you can use some of the perks for the 4 trips you take a year then it may make sense.
I personally think, paying for only one of you would be a better speculation.

I recently received the same offer, along with one for $1,199 for Exec Platinum. Is the latter worth it?

I would say yes if it’s truly Exec Platinum and not just Plat you talking about. If you fly on AA internationally you would be able use the 4 systemwide upgrades to upgrade your class of travel.
Aka buy the cheap economy ticket Lucky speaks of here and fly in J.

Also access to Oneworld F lounges world wide and Flagship lounges in the US when flying on an international route regardless of booking class.
Plus complementary MCE on AA flights.
Flying in Y long haul will always suck, but having access to F lounges with food and good drink helps little bit.

Will Gold status allow me to select Main Cabin Extra seats for free? And if only I decide to upgrade to Gold, will my wife be able to also upgrade to MCE if we’re flying together?

$1200 for Exec Platinum seems like a no brainer
