IROP, rerouted from EWR to PHL. Can UA pay for my train ticket?

IROP, rerouted from EWR to PHL. Can UA pay for my train ticket?

Last night around 9pm I received a text message from United Airlines saying my 6:20AM flight from YUL to EWR is cancelled because of weather and ATC congestion. (The inbound that usually sleeps at the airport did not make it).
After 2hours and 20 minutes on the phone the agents suggests to move me on American Airlines’s 5:50AM flight from YUL to PHL and I should catch a train.
I had important meeting in the morning in New York so I had to be there, otherwise UA was offering me 48hours later one flight YUL-EWR ..
I got rerouted to PHL on YUL-PHL and paid the PHL to NY train (Amtrak). How do I get UA to reimburse me? Is this possible? The phone agent clearly forced me to get rerouted as she stressed that would be my only option if I catched a train.

That’s unfortunate. In general once you accept an alternate itinerary I don’t think they are required to provide you with a refund but definitely worth asking. I would go to https://www.united.com/ual/en/US/fly/contact.html and either use the refund or customer care option, providing a receipt for the train expenses and see what happens. At the very least they should provide you with some miles.

I do not know if it is possible after the fact, but it is worth trying as suggested by Gaurav. Stress that United offers (offered) tickets from PHL to XXX via EWR or the reverse (in your case) with the EWR to PHL segment as an Amtrak codeshare. I’m not sure UA or Amtrak calls it a “codeshare”, but UA used to sell tickets for certain itineraries that included the PHL – EWR on Amtrak. Tell UA that was the only reason you accepted the routing is because you knew they did this (in the past).

While somewhat different situation, I’ve been on 2 flights the past couple years into BWI and weather forced us to land in DC at Reagan. I’ve submitted receipts to customer service both times and been successfully reimbursed for the $80-$100 taxi fare back to my car which was parked at BWI. The reimbursement came in the form of a voucher, so not quite as good as cash, but still an appreciated gesture.

So, I’d follow the above advice since it has worked for me!
