Infrequent Traveler Question
Hello,
My wife and I are planning a trip (with others) to Europe next year. We want to go business class or better, because it’s duh, clearly better! The issue is San Diego has a whopping 3 direct long haul flights direct: London, Tokyo, and Zurich (seasonally). We also happen to have a couple hundred thousand miles with United Airlines. We’ve been to London a few times, don’t have interest in Tokyo at this time and Edelweiss, the airline that does the Zurich flight does not accept United miles for United award miles travel. We are willing to do the tiny hopper to LAX as a layover for a direct flight to Europe, but we are having trouble navigating all the options for direct flights from LAX to different European locations, taking into account we would like to include airline options from star alliance partners that would accept our United miles. I am totally a novice at this game and would like any suggestions. The idea would be to find direct destinations from either San Diego or LAX in Europe and then we would plan our trip from there. Any help or suggestions are appreciated.
Hi David,
It sounds like you would accept any business class routing to get to Europe? Out of LAX on Star Alliance, you have quite a few (good) options.
You have Warsaw, Frankfurt, Munich, Stockholm, London as all major hubs with non-stop flights from Los Angeles. If you’d be willing to go up to San Francisco, there are even more Europe options from SFO.
You’ll want to search for award space on each individual route. United actually has a decent search engine for this.
Hope that makes sense. Let us know any other questions.
I like to go to the wikipedia page for the airport and look at all the destinations out available. Looking at star alliance carriers should show you all the options available. Then like Ricky said, using the UA search engine is a good start. You could also try the Aeroplan or ANA search tools.
