Help with Ethiopian Airlines miles

I purchased tickets from Newark to Johannesburg on Ethiopian Airlines. We typically fly AA and have their MasterCard. We fly internationally once a year and another trip to Mexico or the Caribbean

My question is what miles program is best to attribute this trip. Can I try United via Star Alliance? or join Ethiopian Airlines program ( Life Miles)?

I also can obtain a credit card to use to add to these miles.

I’d start with rickyw’s suggestion. In general try a program that you can add to later via credit card or normal travel.
