HELP- AA miles on Qantas

HELP- AA miles on Qantas

1. Mikewarren1000 Member

I read the new article by Ben on all these First reward seats on Qantas using AA miles. I have been following all the comments on that Post and I dont get what all the ppl are talking about. There are absolutely No open seats on any Qantas flight in First (using AA miles). I have been looking for a month b/c i have been wanting to do LAX to SYD (or MEL)

I have written a few comments on Ben’s article but no one seems to reply. Maybe its diff than writing a post on here how I am now when I typically get replies of course.

If someone knows how to find these First flights please let me know. I just hung up with AA and they have absolutely nothing on Qantas First (or even Business)

I really want to plan this trip, can some please help me

It could be that they’re gone. I first learned of this from Spencer Howard’s email at 10:28 AM CT yesterday and when these things get announced people tend to pounce quickly. He later tweeted that 8 hours later 22 of his subscribers had booked those seats and some of those flights had 2 seats.

You can also set up alerts in Expert Flyer to notify you when seats become available. It’s not always at the time the schedule opens. 5 years ago I was able to find a single QF F seat on the DFW-SYD route just as the schedule opened. This past November I started looking for seats for Oct 2019 but didn’t find them until January. I actually booked my return first and then the outbound about two weeks later (although this was a business class flight).

The trick is to be flexible on dates and set the alerts for all the gateway cities, not just your preferred one.

I appreciate the tips and suggestions but is there some special way to find these qantas rewards on the AA site??

I feel like I am doing something wrong. I was looking before, during and after all these ppl are saying they see it and I can’t find any

I called AA and they liked also and nothing

I tried from lap top and phone I did Sydney and Melbourne to and from Lax and also Dallas even but absolutely nothing. It was just Fiji business or The AA 787 flight

I just don’t get it I was looking for the last 3 weeks twice a day

Is there a special way on AA to unlock this ???

No, although you can look on BA or the Qantas site itself. For either of those you’ll need to sign up for a frequent flyer number and log in. But you can search for a month at a time on the Qantas site, which makes it nice.

Also, it could depend on the dates you were looking at. See what Spencer posted at

Come to think of it when I booked my SFO-SYD flights they weren’t showing up on AA.com. I found them on Qantas and BA.com but the AA agent was able to see them. I think it was on the outbound flight (which I booked after the return) where the agent wouldn’t waive the phone-in fee even after I explained I couldn’t see the space online. The AA Twitter team (which is excellent) later refunded that fee.

I’m looking on the Qantas site and not seeing any F but do see a number of seats in J for February SFO-SYD, LAX-MEL, LAX-BNE and even one DFW-SYD.

How come nobody replies for help on Ben’s original post where’s I have asked 3 separate times for help. Is it different when the original article was written by Ben I don’t get it. All these ppl are saying they are in real time snagging these tickets in F on Qantas through AA and I can’t find anything

AA agent says there is nothing. But the fact that you remember having a problem also makes me think I am not going crazy.

This has been very frustrating.

I suspect most folks don’t go back and read comments on old posts; I know I don’t.

That makes sense. I was just used to it how we are chatting where it emails you someone replied

At any rate what day are you seeing Business available? Not exactly ideal I think I rather just do AA business and sit alone and be on the 787 than have to sit by someone on Q. Really wanted F on Qantas

I still don’t get how for a month I haven’t seen anything not has AA agents on the phone but all these ppl did

Perplexing

Here’s what I found. Anything that the BA website can see, the AA agents should also be able to see. Looks like just the one flight that’s available to QF members only.

Feb 04
QF 94 – LAX-MEL – shows on AA.com and BA.com shows 1 seat

Feb 05
QF 56 – LAX-BNE – does NOT show on AA.com but BA.com shows 2 seats
QF 94 – LAX-MEL – does NOT show on AA.com or BA.com so limited to QF members

Feb 18
QF 12 – LAX-SYD – shows on AA.com and BA.com shows 2 seats

Feb 23
QF 16 – LAX-BNE – does NOT show on AA.com but BA.com shows 1 seat

Feb 24
QF 16 – LAX-BNE – shows on AA.com and BA.com shows 1 seat
QF 94 – LAX-MEL – does NOT show on AA.com but BA.com shows 1 seat

I did this by using the Flexible Date search on the Qantas site then clicking the radio buttons for both Business and First. From there it’s just the long process of checking each date to see what available because even though the Business icon appears, it could be a flight on Cathay connecting in HKG, which is not what you’re looking for.

Once I found those dates I just looked for the same flights on both AA.com and BA.com.

I’d recently read that the AA app uses a different search technology than the website so I looked for that Feb 04 flight and while it didn’t find the non-stop, it would have routed me on QF 12 LAX-SYD and then a connection to MEL. So I then looked for LAX-SYD and it routed me on QF 94 via MEL! Crazy. So the app isn’t showing the non-stops that the website is. Sigh.

I am going to check it out right now. But yes seems diff web site to phone and i was trying both and having no luck. The whole thing is crazy b/c i was searching this SAME exact route and specifications before this article posted I dont understand it.

At this point not sure Qantas Business is worth flying when i can just take the AA flight and sit alone on a 787. I love their 787 seats in business but was just hoping to try a diff plane and seat given i fly that lax to dfw quite often.

What do you think about business on the 77W to HKG and then spend a few days there and go down to Australia. However, takes time away from my time in Australia. I believe the business seats on the 77W are pretty much the same as the 787 ones i like and in fact better than the seats on First. I did lax to NRt once in First on AA and didnt like the seats. They arent private. The business seats looked better and the small Business cabin on the 77W seems almost like a first class. I guess i could do this since i cant find the Qantas F to save me..

Hey so Feb 18th i checked, thats one of the ones you mentioned. Flight 12 is only showing in Coach.. Thats it..No business and No First

Maybe someone snagged the seats. It no longer shows on BA.com either and having two seats is rare. These things are near-unicorns and you have to grab ’em when you see ’em because they don’t last long.

If you have the time and the miles to do two awards and route via Asia, then go for it. If your time is limited then I’d go straight Down Under to maximize your time there.

It’s not a huge deal doing Asia because it’s still essentially 2 one ways around the same miles cost.

Getting from KHG to Syd is 60K mikes on Qantas first and on A380. Seems like a really good deal but of course there are No Qantas F available for that route either. Fiji has it for 40K w a stop. The whole Qantas thing is really frustrating

There was a BA flight 777 first 50K to get from Asia to Sydney, also no longer to be found anywhere. I guess I should have booked this a few months ago because when I was ready to book last month I have looked everyday as I said and found nothing. Was hoping to avoid Malaysia Air or Fiji and stick to qantas or even BA (from Asia to Australia if I had to do that routing )
