When traveling with my 4 and 8 year olds, can I earn miles on their tickets, especially when we fly up front? If not, at what age can they start earning?

You can’t but they can. I don’t think there is an age restriction on getting a FF number. I knew someone a couple years ago that their 1 year earned first level status on AA. Check with the airline.

They can earn their own miles. I’d recommend crediting to a program that either allows family pooling, has a shopping portal, or sells miles at a good rate. That will make it easier to top off their accounts when it’s time to redeem for an award.
