Flying to South Africa with a mix of Aadvantage and Delta Skymiles

Flying to South Africa with a mix of Aadvantage and Delta Skymiles

    Hi,
I need to fly to Capetown from Mexico in December (but I can always go to US to start the trip if necessary). As I have both Aadvantage and Delta Skymiles, I want to use each program in each direction. But the problem is I don’t know which route is best in order to get the best price possible and with Delta, as they don’t have an award chart, I don’t have a clue of how many miles I need. So my question is that, how many miles do I need with each program and which route should be a best fit for me?
Also, using both programs, is possible to do stopovers? I was hopping to make some as I’ve never been outside North America, so it would be great to do stop overs, maybe in Amsterdam, Paris or Jeddah (in the case of Delta) and Abu Dhabi, Doha, London or Madrid (in the case of AA).
Sorry if my english is not understandable, my mother tongue is spanish.
    Cheers.

    Hi Alan!

Neither program allows stopovers, but that doesn’t mean you can’t build your own.

I would try and use Delta miles on the way out (AeroMexico, Air France, and KLM all fly to Europe from MEX, and would be a great use of your miles). You can always buy a separate ticket from Europe down to South Africa if you want to spend a few days somewhere.

Coming back, same thing. Buy a separate ticket from South Africa to Doha or Abu Dhabi, and then use AA miles to get back. You might also be able to use miles for some of these shorter segments, depending on what you have.

    Have fun!!
