European Compensation for Delayed Baggage?

European Compensation for Delayed Baggage?

1. Anonymous Guest

Hi All,

Back in June we were travelling from Madeira to Barcelona via Lisbon with TAP Portugal.

We landed in BCN to discover none of our 7 bags arrived. Long story short, they arrived at 2200 the next evening, so we were without our bags for 29 hours. We had to purchase emergency clothing, toiletries, medication, etc.

In total we spent €523 for 4 people. We have submitted a claim, however had not heard anything bag. I continue to follow up with TAP who are grossly incompetent and unable to respond. This occurred on the 29th June, I submitted the claim 4th July on my return home and still have lot heard anything back.

Is there any form of compensation that we are entitled to from TAP other than our emergency supplies? Something similar to the EU261 for delayed flights? Normally I wouldn’t care, and would be satisfied with reimbursement of the items we paid for, but after being subjected to appalling service both on the ground when the bags were delayed, and after the fact, I would like to know my options.

Appreciate the help.

Cheers,
J

Similar story traveling on KLM from London to Barcelona via Amsterdam. Bag didn’t make it due to tight connection. I followed up, without a response from KLM for a while. Nothing similar to EU261 for bags unfortunately.

However, after following up numerous times, posting on social media platforms, and given my status with Skyteam, I was given a monetary voucher after three months.

It depends on numerous factors, and given that summer is a popular travel season, I would anticipate a long delay with communications, as usual. But it surely doesn’t hurt to keep trying with different emails and social media platforms, calling, etc.

I’m very sympathetic to your problems with your late arriving luggage and I have no direct experience with TAP in such situations however, I know from experience on other carriers when bags get delayed the next flight is often 24 hours away which may account for your long delay.
I’m sure after this you realize that medication should never travel in checked luggage. I take a special medication and I can’t begin to imagine the stress and hassle (and perhaps physical peril) it would be to get it replaced in a foreign country.
I’d continue to phone TAP customer service for reimbursement of your claim.
