Got on board OS 81 VIE-LAX in J. After an hour we returned to VIE for bad smell in cockpit. Flight cancelled for the day and they recommended staying in local hotel and flying out next day. That didn’t work for our work schedule. We had to get home (I know that doesn’t matter legally).
No flights available to our home airport. We ended up routing to an alternate final destination airport and having family member come get us and drive us 2+ hours home.
We were originally scheduled to arrive at home airport 9pm but didn’t get home until 1am. Austrian is denying compensation because our re-booked flight got in at 10:15pm (only a little over an hour after original final arrival).
However that was arriving at an alternate airport. For us to get to the original final destination, we were 4+ hours late.
Do I have a claim?
