Do you know what happen with the F.F. Miles accumulated when you pass away?. Can it be inherited?

The language on most US carriers claim that miles are owned by the airline and are not transferable or bequeath-able but I think there are data points of airlines working to transfer miles to relatives when approached. Also, if you have the account information of the person who has passed and are next of kin you could book travel directly.

I agree with Gaurav, but there is one important thing to remember, which I learnt when booking award flights with AA (in my family, we have most of our points on individual AA accounts). That is: when you want to pay the compulsory taxes by credit card, the name on the credit card MUST be the same as the account holder’s name (otherwise the ticket issue will be rejected by AA). So as long as one has the account log in details and a valid credit card of the “departed”, one should be fine………

@Daniel B, that’s a good point and I’ve run into that in the past but it’s usually easy to resolve by calling in and having them process it manually when I’m using my cc and miles from my wife’s account. However, she has been flying with me in these cases so it’s been pretty straightforward. Since the deceased wouldn’t be flying with you I’m not sure how easy it would be.

@Gaurav, I was basically just stating what the AA booking website needs to ticket a reservation from another person’s account. With that information, and a little imagination, one could ……….in theory of course……. 🙂

I dont believe airlines can check if the name you provide for the credit card matches the name on the card. Usually the details that are checked are expiration date, security code and the address.

I’ve had success using my own credit card to pay for an award using my sister’s AAdvantage account. I told the agent it was her name on my card and it went through just fine.

@David W: When I accidentally wanted to use my credit card to pay for a reservation (taxes+fees only because it was an award ticket) which we made through my mother-in-law’s AA account, and I entered my name as “the name on the credit card”, a message window popped up saying that the last name on the credit card must be the same as the (AAdvantage) account holder’s last name. When we used her credit card (same card just under her name), everything went through. I did this online, without help from an agent. This was about 18 months or so ago. With regular revenue tickets, I never had this problem even when the purchase was initiated from a family member’s account, but with my credit card.
