Ecuador has suspended international flights, but special permissions were given to certain aircraft to pick up foreign nationals stranded in Ecuador. KL and IB had permission from the Ecuadorian government to operate a flight each into Guayaquil, but the Guayaquil mayor unilaterally ordered to block the runway so neither aircraft could land. Both flights were diverted to Quito. Following the incident, the Ecuadorian prosecutor’s office has initiated an investigation into this issue.
