Conditions of Car rental insurance on AMEX Platinum

Conditions of Car rental insurance on AMEX Platinum

  1. Peter S New Member

    Hi guys,
I am in a pretty bad situation at the moment. Yesterday I rented a car from the Sixt branch in MUC and I headed off to Italy with the intent of spending some days in Milan and Florence and then going back to Germany. I rented the car with my AMEX Platinum and did not get any additional insurance from Sixt or third parties. As luck would have had it, when I came today back to my car (a few hours ago) I found a broken window and they stole many things we had in the trunk (nothing was visible and the car was parked in a big avenue). I’ve filed a police report and contacted with Sixt to get another car here in Milan and will be doing so tomorrow.

However, in the meantime I am worried of what kind of insurance I will receive (if any). On the AMEX Plat page it states “Coverage is not available for vehicles rented in Australia, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Jamaica, and New Zealand.”. The vehicle wasn’t rented in Italy, but was in Italy and after reading the fine print, I think I would otherwise be subject to coverage. Do any of you know if AMEX will cover the damage caused to the car and/or stolen items? Should I just contact with them directly? Any kind of advice will be greatly appreciated.

You should contact Amex directly and explain to them your situation and see what your coverage looks like. Clearly you didn’t rent from one of the listed countries but your accident occurred there, which is tricky.

    Thanks David

In Italy when renting a car you cannot decline insurance so perhaps they don’t cover because they know those cars are fully insured when renting in Italy. Good luck – I hope things work out favorably for you.
