Just a follow up question –
In order to use thank you points and still receive EQM’s –should i pay with my citi card and use the points to reimburse the dollars spent or should i just book through the citi thank you portal which has a better points value?

Book through the portal! 1.6¢ for flights on American, 1.3¢ on other carriers that way.
