Checking luggage through separate tickets

Checking luggage through separate tickets

  1. matthewj New Member

    I recently booked a business class award ticket through Air France (MUC to SFO). I wasn’t able to add the last leg to my destination to my award booking so I will be booking either an Alaska or Virgin America flight as a separate ticket to my final destination (SFO to PDX).

    I was wondering if I will be able to check my bag all the way to PDX on two separate tickets. I know that this is dependent on Air France and I wasn’t able to find much online if this is likely or if I should plan on having to recheck my bag at SFO. Also, any recommendations on how much time I should give myself for this layover? I have Global Entry but haven’t gone through customs at SFO before.

    Thanks!

    You might be able to, but it doesn’t matter as you have to claim your baggage anyway. So you will collect it, pass through customs then drop it off with AS or whoever. If it’s not checked through you can check it then.

    Thanks Mark! Forgot about the fact that you have to collect baggage before customs. It has been a long time since I have entered the US and it hasn’t been my final destination.

    Hi,

    In my experience, you have to ask the agent while check-in. Sometimes companies have agreements for such cases, sometimes not.

    Last year, I’ve flown from GVA to BKK with Emirates on one ticket, 3 hours layover in BKK and had BKK-HAN with Thaï Airways (tickets bought seperately). The check-in agent in GVA could mark the luggage directly to HAN thanks to Emirates-Thaï to have agreements.

    If you want to know before departure, maybe you can call the Air-France hotline to check.

    Yes i am worried about this as well

    I am flying the below route all booked as separate tickets.

    SLC -> SFO (Delta)
    SFO -> TPE (China Airlines)
    TPE -> DPS (China Airlines)

    Any idea if i can check all the way from SLC to DPS?

    @Jent Like @MarkS says above, pretty much ALL international arrivals in the US must claim their bags and recheck it, even if bags are thru checked. It’s inconvenient but that’s just how the US likes to do it.

    @Jason Kramer I think it’ll depend on the Delta agent you get at checkin. since both airlines are in SkyTeam, Delta should be able to thru check.
