chase rewards transfer question

chase rewards transfer question

1. r hirsch New Member

i have 30k chase rewards points. i will definitely transfer these to united, southwest, or some to each. i need to do this transfer before june.

i currently have 28000 southwest miles. i currently have 86000 united miles.

i have no big imminent travel plans coming up. my home airport is MCO.

if you were i, how would you distribute the 30k chase miles.

again, i’m not interested in transferring to anything other than united or southwest.

thanks!

It really depends on your usual travel patterns. Do you prefer redeeming with UA or WN? How aspirational is your travel? If your intent is to redeem for international travel, UA is your only option.

Is there a reason you cant hold onto the points with Chase?

Why cannot you hold on? If you have a household member with UR cards you can transfer to them.
If not, this is what I would do:
If you know you will travel WN a lot and dont care about International and/or premium class travel – then do Southwest
If you are after international trips and want to experience Business class I would go with United.
I would not split those 30K between multiple programs.

i have to cancel this card so i must do the transfer by june 1. i know all the reasons to keep the card. but i must cancel by 1 june for reasons that don’t matter.

i appreciate the responses!

@r hirsch, what card do you have? You could open a no fee chase card or downgrade to one and keep the points there until you need them again in the future…

i have chase sapphire which i need to cancel. i also have chase freedom, but with freedom i cannot transfer points to airlines. so all my points are in sapphire.

which card could i downgrade to such that i can still xfer points to airlines?

thanks

You will lose the ability to transfer points with any downgrade but keep the flexibility to do so in the future. You can downgrade to the basic Sapphire, the Chase unlimited, a second Chase freedom or even a Chase Slate I believe. At the very least this will help improve your age of credit and help with your credit score in the future. If you have the Chase freedom I assume you will keep accruing UR points. If so keep them all together in your Chase account and when you need to transfer them in the future either try to get the Ink Plus or the Sapphire Preferred again or upgrade the card back to a CSP to make the transfer. Hope this helps.
