Cathay vs Qatar from DC to Phuket

Cathay vs Qatar from DC to Phuket

    Happy Monday!

Curious to know your thoughts. I’m planning a trip to HKT for my birthday and will be using AAdvantage miles. Should I take Cathay or Qatar?

Options are either Cathay (IAD-HKG-HKT) or Qatar (IAD-DOH-HKT).

Cathay flight from IAD leaves at a strange time 1AM I think? Which makes me think I won’t have as good as experience trying to enjoy business class. 🙂 The flight time is around 15 hours to HKG followed by a 3.5 hour flight to HKT.

Now the Qatar flight would be in a QSuite, the flight leaves at a decent time in the evening; however flight time is only around 12 hours to DOH. Then another 6 hour flight to HKT.

I’m really interested in the great reviews about the QSuite, but not really loving the flight times.

I’d take QSuites for sure. 12 hours is more than enough time to enjoy, in my opinion. That’s 6ish hours of sleep, plus 2 meals plus relaxing/movies/etc.

Keep in mind that by flying QR on AA points, it would price as two awards: IAD-DOH = 70K and then DOH-HKT = 40K for a 110K total.

On CX it would just be 70K from IAD-HKG-HKT. At 110K ,you could look for a connector to JFK or BOS and fly first into HKG on Cathay,
