Cathay First class rebooked to Business

Cathay First class rebooked to Business

1. Anonymous Guest

Hi everyone,

I’m experiencing a problem with Cathay that I don’t know how to solve. I booked a First class ticket JFK-HKG a few months ago using my AA miles. However, after the ticket was issued, Cathay made a schedule change and moved me from the JFK flight to EWR in Business class.

Now, AA says that there is no available seats on First class on any other flight and Cathay says I have to talk to AA. So what should I do?

Please help!
Regards,
Alvaro

Hi everyone,

I have a problem with Cathay that I have no idea how to solve. I redeem my AA miles before the devaluation for a First class round ticket from JFK to HKG. Today I noticed that Cathay has rebooked it to the EWR flight and downgraded me to Business class.

I have called AA and they say there’s no availability on any other flights, and Cathay says I should talk to AA. I’m now on a waitlist for another flight with a First class cabin.

I would appreciate any advice.
Thanks in advance.

Welcome @asb1985 – what a terrible thing! Did AA at least refund your miles?

AA can’t force Cathay to open up more award space but at the very least they should refund the difference in business class vs. first class.

@Tiffany – does AA have an obligation to do something to get a passenger back in First even if it means they have to pay for the upgrade from Business?

Was the JFK to HKG segment you were booked on cancelled? I think you can try calling AA and CX in a 3 way call (or ask the AAgent to get a CX rep on the line) and try to resolve the issue

Thanks for the replies. AA did offered to refund the difference between F and B but it doesn’t make any sense to do that, more after the devaluation.
Apparently the way this goes is that AA has a system to request a seat to Cathay to be released, after they respond, AA can reissue the ticket to the new itinerary. But there is no guarantee and Cathay takes weeks to respond.

Make sure the file is referred to the oneWorld liaison — it can take a couple of weeks, but that’s your best option. They should fix it for you, especially because they forced an airport change on you, which is rather ridiculous.

Thank you Tiffany. I called them back and spoke to the supervisor. The case was escalated to the CX liaison and it should respond within 72 hours. I’ll keep you posted.

I know this is an old thread, but I just had something similar happen to me on Lufthansa. I booked four seats in F DFW-FRA using miles and about a week later, received a notice that my class was changed to business, due to an aircraft change. My miles have not been reimbursed yet either. What would be the best way to approach this? Would I be able to ask for another flight with F that is showing revenue seats and hope they give me the seats? Or do the seats need to be showing as award space? Thanks!

I’d call LH (or maybe 3 way in the program you booked with) and request they put you on a flight with F, even if no award space is showing.

@Tiffany-Yesterday I too was downgraded from first to business class on the LAX-HKG leg of an upcoming January trip booked with AK Mileage Plan miles. I called the AK Partner Desk and they said they are trying to get me booked on a different CX flight that day that shows only paid first class availability. AK said they are emailing them and hope to get a response in a few days. The AK agent also said she received several calls before mine involving CX downgrades of passengers from premium economy to economy. Would you you be able to get a response from CX regarding what’s going on? My original flight from LAX-HKG was not canceled and I did a test booking on CX’s website and it showed that paid first class was available on the same flight on which I was downgraded. I booked my original award a few months ago. My return HKG-LAX leg still has me in first class. Thanks, Tiffany.

@ Michael M — It seems there are some equipment swaps going on throughout the CX schedule, which is making a mess of things. I am sure they’ll be able to get you back in First before your trip.
