Cancelling Card After Receiving Retention Bonus

Cancelling Card After Receiving Retention Bonus

  1. dantheman Member

The AF for my personal SPG card posted a few weeks ago. Last week I called for retention offer, and was given 10,000 SPG points to keep the card. I accepted. Phone rep said that the retention bonus would post in 6-8 weeks from my phone call, but the points have already posted. I am still within my 30 day window on the AF. Does anyone know if i can cancel the card for the AF refund but still keep the 10k points since they’re already in my SPG account? Or does Amex have the ability to claw back SPG points that have already been awarded? Wondering if anyone else has been in this situation.

They might not be able to claw back SPG points but if you have a card that earns Membership Rewards they might pull those points back instead.

I’m pretty sure that given the relationship between SPG and Amex, they could claw back points if they really had to.

That being said, it doesnt hurt to call back and explain to them that while you were given and accepted retention offer (which you’re thankful for) you’re still thinking about canceling because of the fee. See what they have to say?

I don’t think retention offers are actually contingent on keeping the card for a certain time. If that was the case, you should have been told about prior to accepting the offer.
