Canadian Credit Card strategy

Canadian Credit Card strategy

  1. Anonymous Guest

Hi – I’m often jealous with the discussions going on around here for the optimal credit card strategies that are available for US based users.

I’m aware that for the time being, signup bonuses and credit card perks are probably the best in the US, but I wanted to pose a new challenge out here for discussing what would be great strategies to use for Canadian based travel enthusiasts. I currently have a TD Visa infinite, and will be looking at applying for the SPG Amex within the next few weeks. After years of using the TD Visa infinite, I think I will be moving myself to another card (one of the aeroplans – as aeroplan is quite valuable for Canadian domestic travel – which is of use to me since I am a recent transplant from Toronto to Calgary and will want to go back often).

I was contemplating the MBNA Alaskan Airlines cards, but will wait on that for the time being since I have a ton of Avios points that I could potentialy redeem for States side travel, and so am focussed more on building up my aeroplan and SPG points balance.

Any suggestions on what would a good card for general spend for Canadians?

Just don’t hold on to the aeroplan points after 2021. Not sure if you are serious for domestic redemptions with aeroplan. Most of the time its not a great use of points. International business remains the best redemption value. Mind you aeroplan is all over the map with taxes and fees.

Welcome, MKhan. I know there are lots of Canadians in this forum, but for the best chance of a response, you might also pose your question to http://canadiankilometers.boardingarea.com/ .

Also, I’d respectfully challenge Cedric’s claim that domestic redemptions aren’t a good value :). If you are indeed traveling Calgary to Toronto often, I just did a quick search and couldn’t find a single date over a 4 month stretch with non-stop options under $550 round-trip (Air Canada or WestJet). Looks like those are 15,000 miles with Aeroplan, so I’d say that’s a solid redemption!
