Buying United Airlines miles

Buying United Airlines miles

  1. surfdoc New Member

United Airlines currently has a 70% bonus on buying miles which makes the average price 2.21 cents per mile. I only buy miles to use on business class flights on United. Is this a reasonable deal to add to my account??

Welcome @surfdoc – we generally only recommend buying miles if you have an immediate use for them. But that doesn’t seem like a great price. Ben only values UA miles at 1.4 cents apiece.

First of all, it is impossible to buy United miles at 1.4 cents or generally for anything less than 2 cents. Second, I have read and been told for business class tickets to Europe miles bought around 2 cents plus your accumulated miles is a good deal. When I might have “immediate” need for miles never allows me or anyone to get this kind of discount. Thus, your reply doesn’t make sense to me respectively. ???

Have you read Ben’s page about how he values points & miles? That might be a good place to start. Look under the Start Here tab above.

70% isnt the best bonus that UA sells miles for, every so often, they sell them with a 100% bonus. However, even then, it’s not a great idea to buy miles without a use in mind. United is moving to dynamic award pricing for their own flights, which isn’t great.
