I stayed at the Sheraton at Amsterdam Schipol Airport this past week on a cheap pre-paid one night rate. I am SPG gold. One week before check in, I received an email asking me to bid a dollar amount to receive an upgrade to a club room. I have never received an email like that for an SPG property in the past. Since I was arriving at night and leaving the next morning, I was unsure what benefit, if any, I would get from the club room so bid $5 to see what would happen. In 24 hours, I received an email telling me that they could not accommodate my upgrade request. A couple questions:

[*]Any other data points on successful bids for a club room upgrade at an SPG property?
[*]Does bidding on an upgrade, and not getting it, hurt your chances of getting an upgrade to a better room at check in? I know that as SPG Gold I am not entitled to suite upgrades, but I routinely do get upgraded to view rooms, or larger rooms, and sometimes (at Four Points and Sheraton’s elsewhere) I’ve received suite upgrades as a Gold member.
[*]Any other tips for successfully bidding to get an upgrade on a hotel room? I would like to be prepared for future stays where this is an option.

I have received these for Hilton stays in the past but can’t remember if I’ve received one for SPG stays. My usual process if I was interested would be to google Hotel Name + upgrade bid or club room bid and see what you find. FT has threads for airline bids but not sure what resources are available for specific hotels.
