Better to cancel Amex card before applying for different Amex card?

Better to cancel Amex card before applying for different Amex card?

I currently have both the old SPG personal card and the new SPG luxury card. I’ll cancel the old one sooner or later, certainly before the new annual membership payment is due.

I’m considering applying for a couple of new Amex cards – the Hilton Aspire and the new Gold card. They would not put me over the 5-card or 90-day Amex credit card limits, though if I get both I’d have five Amex credit cards and two Amex charge cards.

My question: Any sense of whether it would help, hurt or neither if I cancel my old SPG card before applying for the new cards? For what it’s worth, my creidit rating is 800+ and I’ve used my existing cards regularly (except for the new SPG luxury card, since I only recently got it).

Thanks for any advice on this.
