Am I allowed to take a small backpack with my carry one?

Most US airlines allow one carry-on and one personal item. In theory the personal item must fit under the seat in front of you. Of course if you’re in the bulkhead, both items will have to go in the overhead bins for takeoff & landing.

So if you have a rollaboard and a backpack and a purse, that technically won’t work but if you can fit the purse inside the backpack, then you’ll be fine.
