Hey Lucky,
Got kind of a convoluted question to ask. I am Ted MileagePlus Premier member and also have close to 150000 miles on LH Miles & More from last year.
I am planning a trip (for leisure, imagine that) in July to VIE from ORD and am attempting to fly business on OS. Here’s the dilemma. I can call Miles&More to book a biz award round trip ticket or I can by economy via TED (so I gain some miles on my MileagePlus) but at the same time try and use my Miles&More points to upgrade. Is that even possible? Can I book a ticket on one loyalty program, but use points from another to upgrade? I assume that the second plan is not the best since at the price for an upgrade-able economy fare I could prolly just pay for a round trip biz ticket. I also noticed that buying economy on OS via TED is way more expensive than buying direct from OS while the opposite is true for biz.
Just need your expertise on the best way to use my points wisely, especially since I hardly use my Miles&More on anything. Basically trying to gain something to maintain my Premiere status while using my LH miles to pay for the most of the trip.
Not sure I am being very clear, but appreciate your help.
Best,
Gerard
Hello Gerard.
Do you mean United MileagePlus member?
TED died in 2009.
Are you trying to book a paid ticket true United’s website?
Hi Gerard,
Regardless, you can only use miles to upgrade from the program which issued the ticket.
So if you want to buy an economy ticket and upgrade using M&M miles, make sure Lufthansa issues the ticket. You’ll need to purchase a higher fare class, and it will depend on availability, but you can then credit the flown miles to any Star Alliance partner.

Hi No Name – yes I mean United. I still call it Ted for whatever reason; sorry for the confusion.

Dear Tiffany,
Thank you for the response. Here is what I was thinking. I was going to book an eco ticket that is upgradable on LH and then use my M&M miles for upgrading. However, I was planning on crediting the earned miles from the trip to my United MileagePlus account (instead of having the accrued miles go to the M&M account). I think you are suggesting the same and that it is doable, am I correct in my interpretation?
Best Regards,
Gerard
Yep, that’ll work!
