Award Redeposit for Flight in May?

Award Redeposit for Flight in May?

  1. Anonymous Guest

Had previously booked award flights on both UA and AA for a fun trip this May to Italy which will unfortunately have to be cancelled now. Has anyone called either airline to ask for their miles back and not had to pay the fee as far out as May? I know Ben noted in his guide that y’all have had luck getting the fee waived for flights through April.

Obviously being cognizant of their guidance of not calling in unless my flight is in the next 72 hours, but is it worth calling at an off-time to see if I can get the miles redeposited now? Or just wait until closer to May?

Unless you are EXP with AA (I assume not, but just checking) then you will pay $150 if you cancel the award ticket. You can try to cancel now and ask for a fee waiver, but unlike UA, AA’s fee doesn’t increase over time – it is $150 right now, and it will be $150 a few hours before the flight. For AA I would wait and see if it is cancelled. It almost surely will be. For UA it is a question of paying $75 now, or waiting and hoping UA cancels, but if it doesn’t then you’ll have to pay $150 (or $125?). I’d wait and gamble.

I cancelled my trip for May 2-18 to Europe on AA. They redeposited my miles with no fees or questions. They were very helpful. Lifetime Gold only
