Award redemption on AA or BA for Cathay, or on UAL for Singapore or Lufthansa

Award redemption on AA or BA for Cathay, or on UAL for Singapore or Lufthansa

  1. Anonymous Guest

So, this year I followed Lucky’s tips and got five or more credit cards, then spent the minimum amount to get the bonus miles.

I have lots of AA and BA points that I want to redeem for 1st class seats on Cathay; and lots of UAL points that I want to redeem for 1st class seats on Singapore and Lufthansa.

I don’t see how you can see what first class award seats are available on AA or BA websites for Cathay flights. Similarly, I don’t see on UAL first class award seats available on Singapore or Lufthansa.

How do I see what’s available?

    Thanks.

    Hi Mark,

This post might help with knowing which tools to use to find award space: http://onemileatatime.boardingarea.com/2014/12/18/where-to-find-award-space/

United miles can’t be used for Singapore First, and can only be used for Lufthansa First within 14 days of departure, but that should get you started!

Whenever I needed award tickets on CX using my AA miles, I just simply called the AA agents (typically at 2.00am when the schedule opened up), and they were able to book the tickets FREE OF CHARGE (no booking fee) since you cannot book it yourself through AA’s website. I know it is “old school”, buy it was quick, and free :-))).

I feel like CX J space has been kind of scarce (though it’s been a while since I’ve really checked), and their F space is basically released very last minute so it’s tough to get. When awards are there, check with BA segment by segment or it probably wont show up. You can use JAL or QF’s tools to verify.

For your BA avios, I’d probably save them for shot haul redemptions since otherwise, their awards are pretty costly and they add hefty surcharges.

Avios are best for Short-haul and routes that are on the edge i.e. BOS-DUB in EI J at a domestic F price and LAX-HNL at the price of a Continental US flight but, terrible for Ultra-long haul. UA miles can’t be used for SQ but, you could transfer from UA to Chase Ultimate Rewards to Kris Flyer. And LH is quite a bit more than UA
