Planning a trip Melbourne > Manchester rerturn next August 2017 – want to purchase either Virgin / Singapore Flexi-fare for two and use AMEX Velocity Plat miles/ points to upgrade from economy to premium economy both ways – stopping in Singapore on the outward journey for a few days.

I was just telling Tiffany to combine the two posts as they were the same topic – there’s no actual link. Unfortunately no one has replied to your actual question yet. I don’t know the answer but hopefully someone will answer soon!
You can’t do what you want to do with a Virgin Australia ticket or Velocity points. You will need to transfer your Velocity points to Singapore Krisflyer miles. You can do this by logging on to your account. The transfer ratio is 1.35:1, so you technically lose out, so wait until you’ve done the research and the maths before transferring. Once you do the transfer, it’s instant.
There are two ways to do what you want to do. An outright redemption for a premium economy seat on a Singapore Airlines flight using Krisflyer miles (there will also be a cash component); or buy a ticket from Singapore Airlines for an economy class seat on one of their own flights, and then upgrade using miles. Make sure that upgrade space is available before buying the ticket, then you can transfer the points and get the upgrade confirmed instantly. It would be up to you to work out which is cheaper in terms of miles and cash, and which combination suits you best.
If you’re prepared to pay for a full fare flexi economy ticket, you should look at the prices of premium economy, which is usually not much more expensive – sometimes literally a few dollars. From there, you can save your miles for another trips and enjoy premium economy, or it’s a relatively small number of miles to upgrade to business, which you’ll find much more comfortable and a nice experience.
Good luck!
