Amex Platinum bonus miles

Amex Platinum bonus miles

    Hi Lucky,
Really enjoy your reviews. I switched to the Platinum card from Gold card last year. I charge a lot of in airline tickets to the card ($150,000)and thought I would get 5X points (up from 3x for the gold card). Just found out that because it’s a business card, I only get single points. Is it worth it to cancel the business card and switch to personal? are there any benefits to the business card I would lose? would having both be worth the extra expense?
    Thanks!

Might be worthwhile to have both the personal and business cards

Airfare on the personal card is 5x and 150k a year is 750k points.

Business and First class airfare purchased thru Amex Travel (for travel on any airline) when using the “pay with points” option gets you a 50% refund on points used, and it considered a cash ticket so you’d earn the usual flight miles, elite credits in your airline program. For tickets in economy, 50% points refund is only if the airline you purchased a ticket for matches the airline you selected for the airline credit.

By having both cards, you’d potentially be maximizing the benefits of both cards – http://onemileatatime.boardingarea.com/2017/03/11/maximizing-amex-pay-with-points/

Isn’t the business card getting the 5x airfare bonus as a standard feature shortly?

@Gaurav Yes, but only if you book via Amex Travel, where as the personal card you’d get 5x if booking via Amex Travel or directly from the airline. http://onemileatatime.boardingarea.com/2017/03/06/amex-business-platinum-card-changes/

That could be an issue if prices are different on Amex Travel than on airline’s own websites.

Ah, yes. Might be worth playing around with the business card options before plunking down another $550 for the personal though. I’ve had decent luck booking through AmEx before.
