Amex Platimum 100k

Amex Platimum 100k

    Dear Lucky and readers,

I am writing to you today to explain my experience with the 100k Amex Platinum offer you posted on your blog in May. I applied for this offer and got the card, after making the minimum spend of $4k I received the 100k points. I have the Amex Everyday preferred card and this was my main card for daily use so I don’t not see a need to keep the platinum card. Before I called up customer service to cancel the card I made sure that I spoke with
a representative to see if I could transfer my points to my everyday preferred card and she told me that yes that I could do this so she went ahead and transferred my points and canceled the platinum card. I’ve had my Amex points now for 5 months and come to find today that they took away my 100k points from my account. When I called up and asked why my points where missing they told me that it was deemed “misuse” of points after I was specifically told by Amex customer service agent that I could do this. I would not have canceled the card otherwise. I am extremely unhappy with this answer and after speaking with a supervisor she told me that I could file a complaint with corporate but as far as I can see Amex are not willing to do much for me at this point. If this was a situation you had to deal with what course of action would you recommend? Keep in mind they have the recorded conversation of their agent telling me that I could do this along with notes so it is on record which their supervisor told me she had read. Thanks for any help or advice you or anyone could give me on this matter.

    Regards
    Renae Burns (unhappy Amex customer)

Hey @Renae, this is horrible, but I don’t think it’s actually due to transferring the points or canceling the card. A lot of people who applied for that 100k offer got their accounts locked, or the points tied up.

I can’t remember where I read that though — maybe someone here has more info?

Yes, it was manufactured spending. All accounts on this 100K bonus were locked down. Even MR points that were accumulated prior to this AMEX mistake (hate to be the person that approved it!) were not available. You simply couldn’t transfer anything.

Sorry to hear what happened @Renae. Did you pay the annual fee? If so I would fight like crazy to get them back. Were your spend requirement charges legit? The problem is AMEX appears to be doing anything they can to void these bonuses out.

hi @Renae, sorry this is happening to you. Can you confirm that all your spending was organic and not MS? Either way, I would complain to the CPFB but you obviously have a much stronger case if you did not MS.

Also, in the future, I’d wait until closer to the end of your first year to cancel your card in the future and in general MR points should not need a call to transfer unless for some reason both cards have different MR account numbers.

I would totally look in to filing a CPFB against Amex. You have a stronger case if you did not MS. Even if you did, you still have a case.

I definitely did not manufacture spend on this card. All my charges where legit. What they are telling me is that what I did canceling the card and transferring the points to my Amex everyday proffered was deemed “misuse” even though they have our recorded conversation and notes that their agent told me that I could do this

    Definitely CPFB complaint.

@Renae, did you pay the annual fee? If not this is important info going forward for people who get AMEX points. If you didn’t MS and paid the fee there has to be something else I would think. I would calling them everyday asking for supervisors, management, whoever to try and get them back, plus a bonus for putting you through this.
