American systemwide upgrades query

American systemwide upgrades query

We have a schedule LAX /ORD/BCN on one day with an overnight flight to BCN.
Then the following morning we fly BCN/JFK/GRU.
The LAX flight to connect with the ORD/BCN flight is very tight, about 40 minutes to connect and any short delay we and or our bags would miss the connection. The next leg BCN/JFK is the following day and upgraded with SWU economy to business. If we miss our connecting flight in Chicago it is unlikely we will arrive in Barcelona in time for the flight BCN/JFK.
Is American responsible to put us on the next available flight with the SWU to business class or can they reissue the ticket in economy? Thanks for any advice.

Technically they will just rebook you in your original fare class, but in my experience if you get a nice agent and explain the situation, most will honor the already processed SWU. Your issue will be they may have already filled business class since it would be within 24 hours.

Can you get on an earlier flight from LAX to give yourself a better buffer?

Hello, thanks for your reply. I contacted AA but they were looking for an additional fare running into thousands of dollars just to change to an earlier flight
