Advice kindly sought re issues booking Qantas 1st via AA.com

Firstly, thank you for taking the time to read this — I do appreciate it.

I just wondered if anyone knew the answer to this one? I have been lucky enough to book QF 1st three times in the last three years for my Aussie partner in the LHR-SYD direction. I am approaching the time when I was going to attempt to book a new SYD-LHR one-way flight — for the first time in this direction — for a flight about a year in advance (around March 2018). However, even in my trial runs I am not seeing ANY Qantas flights returned in the search results on that route, only BA flights (via PVG or PEK) or Finnair flights. I have done trial runs for a month out, six months out, 11.5 months out and yet I am not seeing ANY Qantas flights at all, as I say. I have not had problems in the past booking LHR-SYD flights, so I just wondered if I was missing something obvious here with the opposite SYD-LHR route on AA.com? Or would I have more luck phoning AA instead oftrying to book online if I knew there was definitely QF 1st space available (e.g. via Awardnexus or BA.com)? I’m just flummoxed as to why I can’t see ANY Qantas flights showing on this route. (I appreciate QF route via DXB now, but my input parameters are simply SYD and LHR.)

Any guidance would be gratefully received!

Well, I think QF space is generally hard to come by and maybe in this case, they’re just being stinger than ever before.

Try searching for space on each separate leg – SYD-DXB and DXB-LHR. All SYD-LHR flights stop in DXB-LHR anyway so you might have better luck this way.

Also check for space using BA and Cathay’s tools to to see if space shows up. AA’s tool could be glitchy or something. If that is the case, call AA and they should be able to out together a ticket for you.

Many thanks for this, David — that’s great advice about separate leg searching. Thank you. 😉

I assume, David, if I see QF 1st space showing on either BA or CX sites (and for the sake or argument, that space IS still available and isn’t phantom), then, with sufficient AA miles in my account, an AA agent should be able to redeem that space for me over the phone without too many issues?
