About cathay pacific’s upgrade availability
Hi, I am planning on a vacation from JFK/ORD to hug on Dec.17 (departure) and Jan. 10(return). I would like to know the possibility that cathay pacific will release business class seats for upgrade a week before departure at that time. Also, I would like to know which route will have the better chance of upgrade availability (JFK or ORD). Thanks!
@Carl, assume you mean HKG 😉 Of course those are busy times for travel but perhaps @Tiffany can let us know what trends she’s seen in upgrades. Will you be using Asia Miles to upgrade a ticket bought on Cathay?

Thanks for your reply!!! Yes I will be using asiamiles. I just hope that they will release the upgrade availability at some time (I will definitely be monitoring the release everyday).
Also, I would like to know the possibility of availability of upgrade from premium economy to business on May 5 from ORD to HKG on cathay pacific. Thanks!
@Tiffany could you please assess the early May and early January cathay pacific business upgrade availability situation? Thanks!
Hey @Carl, so in general, Cathay Pacific is pretty consistent about releasing unsold space to inventory in the days leading up to departure. The challenge with travel over peak dates (Christmas, New Years, CNY, etc), is that there might not be any unsold space, and CX will wait until the very last second.
So this year when I was looking at return flights from Thailand, space was opening up maybe 10-12 hours prior to departure for flights the week of Jan 4th. Cities with multiple frequencies will have better odds, so New York will generally be better than Chicago.
But really, at this point it’s too early to say with any specificity, really. That time of year is just a crapshoot with award and upgrade inventory.

Thank you very much for your help! I now decide to upgrade to business in May’s trip (only one segment) and upgrade again to business next time.
