AA flights JFK-SAN

Do you happen to know when American put on hold the direct flight between SAN to JFK? This flight was always crowded and it looks like there are no direct flights until late into August. Right in the middle of summer season… Any ideas why?

I believe there are runway repairs underway ay JFK. https://www.travelandleisure.com/airlines-airports/jfk-runway-closing-summer-travel-delays
I’ve heard certain flights have been cancelled for the near term until the project is finished.

Schedule adjustments due to the 737 MAX grounding, most likely. Many non-hub flights have been cancelled as there simply aren’t enough planes otherwise. So routes are being adjusted to consolidate passengers in the hub cities on their connections.

JFK has borne the brunt of these route cancelations, given that it’s technically only a “focus city”, and having fewer planes going to JFK makes operations easier while they deal with the runway mess.
