SPG vs IHG?

SPG vs IHG?

  1. Anonymous Guest

    Lucky,

I know that the Platinum benefits are superior to Spire Elite, but feel like there are more SPG Plats around so more competition for upgrades and for reward rooms.

You also value IHG at 0.6c/point vs SPG at 2+c/point, but get 10 points per $ spent at IHG and only 1:1 at SPG. So actually getting 6c/$ at IHG.

Does that change your mind in any way on SPG>IHG?

Hi indiandutch, just one correction, I believe SPG earns 2 points per $ at their properties, three if you are a gold or platinum member which a lot of us are based on the AmEx Platinum or night stays. That changes the value proposition. Ultimately you have to decide what program is best for you based on your earning and redemption patterns. A program that works well for someone like Ben who spends most of the year in hotels is not great for everyone.

Another thing I’ve noticed is that IHG has blackout dates or rooms, as in award nights aren’t always available even when rooms are. Whereas starpoints are always eligible if a standard room is available. Something to keep in mind. I’d check around at the places you plan on visiting and seeing trends in availability on IHG.
