SPG/Marriott: Combine now or later?

SPG/Marriott: Combine now or later?

    Dear Lucky,

I hope all is well in whichever time zone you may be in now. A quick question, I have reached 47 nights in SPG this year, 3 short on renewing my Platinum before the 18 August cut off date.

I understand SPG Platinum will be matched to Marriott Platinum Elite, which in Marriott’s program requires 75 nights instead (I think?). I’m going for my third year in a row to reach Lifetime Platinum and want this year to count as a Platinum year.

I think I read somewhere that if I combine before reaching Platinum on SPG stand-alone, I will need to reach the 75 nights to count for Platinum Elite this year, is that true or should I first reach Platinum on SPG then combine my accounts? Does that make any difference or is there no downside to combining straight away?

    Thanks a lot in advance.

    Cheers
