No PQM on United for paying for upgrade?

No PQM on United for paying for upgrade?

    Hey Lucky –

I upgraded to business class from economy plus on United a month ago from EWR to SFO. I paid $419 on check in to do it. When I looked at my mileage statement, they treated it as paid for by awards and did not give me the equivalent PQM for business class which I got on the way home. Is that normal? Does United not count the money paid for upgrades (not using miles to upgrade) towards achieving status? Are there other airlines that do?

It’s been years since I’ve paid for an upgrade but I don’t recall getting a class of service bonus for EQM on AA for a paid upgrade. Back then it was based on the original fare class. Rules change often, you might give them a call for clarification.

I’m pretty sure paid upgrades in situations like yours are from a separate fare class where you earn PQMs (MQMs on Delta/EQMs on American) based on the original fare class.

    Hi @lissijean, and welcome!

@Gia and @David W are correct — you earn your PQMs based on the fare you originally paid. Any extras at check-in don’t change your fare class, unfortunately, so you won’t earn additional miles.
