Marco Polo or AAdvantage?

Marco Polo or AAdvantage?

  1. Anonymous Guest

In the next few years I will fly between Shanghai and US frequently, so I’m wondering which loyalty program will be better to pursue, Marco Polo (Cathay Pacific) or AAdvantage (American Airlines)?

Shen, it will depend on what kind of class you book tickets in, what you’d like to use the miles for, what airline you’d be flying and whether you are more interested in achieving status or accruing miles.

If you’re planning to fly CX economy quite a bit, Asia Miles/Marco Polo might be a better program since AA doesnt award miles for a bunch of CX’s economy fares, not even EQMs. https://www.aa.com/i18n/AAdvantage/earnMiles/airlines/cathayPacific.jsp

If you’re flying mostly AA in econ or CX J, then AAdvantage may be good, but remember that elite status also requires 4 segments on AA metal.

AsiaMiles does have some decent earning rates for CX and AA though – https://www.asiamiles.com/am/en/about/partners#3a15e20ca1166110VgnVCM100000e6ce1c39RCRD but their award chart is distance based.
