I’m new to the upgrade game and I need some help

Last week, I qualified for Alaska Airlines MVP status for the very first time (actually, it’s the first time I’ve earned status on any airline). So I’m new to this game and I’m not sure how complimentary first-class upgrades work, as I’ve never before had the opportunity to take advantage of it. So I’m hoping you experts can help me understand the system (I know, I’m a newbie – please be kind!).

Anyway, I thought I’d try to get an upgrade flight, so I searched the Alaska Airlines site for a flight, and I’m confused by the search results. The first screenshot below is the search for a standard flight, without any upgrade option selected. It shows that the cost of a first-class seat is $273.

Next, I did the same exact search, but this time I selected the MVP upgrade option. The result is shown in the following screenshot. I don’t understand why the First Class Upgrade cost ($516) is almost double that of the First Class cost ($273).

According to the Alaska Airlines website, MVP status entitles you to a complimentary upgrade to first-class. I asume that means a free upgrade from a coach fare to first, is that correct? If so, then why does it present two first-class options to me, at different prices? And why is the upgrade almost twice the cost of standard first-class?

As you can see, I’m really confused. Anyone care to help out a miles and points newbie?
