Virgin America imposing high YQ on SQ redemptions
Hey Ben,
I just made a redemption booking on a Y class SQ ticket between SIN-PVG. I transferred 20k SPG points to make up 25k VX points, thinking that it will only cost me 9600 points and 21 dollars worth of fuel surcharges and taxes. When the ticket was issued, I was asked to pay taxes of 133 USD! How should I seek recourse on this? The CSR blatantly told me that the chart was “out of date”, and when I went digging around on Flyertalk afterwards, it appears that the chart has not been updated since April 2016.
Any advice on what to do next will be appreciated. I feel cheated by both SPG and VX, after getting so excited that VX is now a SPG partner….
Have you booked the ticket yet? I’d HUCA as well as ask to clarify if VX passes on fuel surcharges. If they do not, then taxes should be about $25
Wilson, not really fair to blame SPG here, they have no control over how transfer partners issue awards. It depends on how far you want to take this. You could take a screen shot of the award quote online and contact VX customer service and corporate to see if they can do something. You could also use newspaper customer advocates and the BBB etc. All depends on how much time you want to spend. Just be polite and persistent if you want to pursue.
