Upgrade to United Business or save for separate flight?

Upgrade to United Business or save for separate flight?

  1. smiles33 New Member

    Hi all!

I have about 140K UR points from my CSR and 80K AmEx Gold points from signing up for both cards within the past few months. I anticipate earning another 20-30K UR points in the next few months and also just signed up for a new business card providing 80K UR points.

We don’t travel often (mostly road trips), but we have an SFO-TPE trip for a wedding later this year. I figure travel is better than cash back (especially with UR points), but should I use the points to upgrade from United’s Economy Plus to Business or save the points to book a separate family trip later? United’s Business class seems to have few fans…My husband is indifferent to upgrading.

We have 2 adults and 2 kids, so I’d either have to send just 1 adult to business class or save up to get all 4 of us there. We would need 240K United Miles (plus $4800) to upgrade 4 of us. Seems excessive now that I type it out but this is our first int’l trip and it’s only 1 week (so I want us to be as rested as possible).

    Thanks for any advice!

If you’re going to be perfectly comfortable in UA Econ Plus, I’d stay there. UA SFO-TPE is operated by UA’s 747, which means business class is 8 across – nothing to get excited about. Yes, service & food is better and you get a flat bed but on a very old and cramped product.
