Paid economy or award biz and first

Paid economy or award biz and first

Hi there (posting as a registered member of the forum this time),

I am asked by my company to go to HKG (from the West Coast) on short notice and have to return on the same day. The company is paying for economy (I know, cheap!!). I noticed that there’s business award seats on CX on the way there and first class award on the way back. I have enough AA miles for 3 RT biz saver awards on CX. The paid economy ticket is only $1000.

    1) If you are able to get reimbursed up to the $1000, would you use your miles to book the award seats?
    2) Or just suck it and be on economy for 25 hours (with 14 hours on the ground meeting people from 7am to 9pm)?

Just curious on your thought process on this. Thanks.

It would really depend on what else you need miles for… If you have enough miles for the personal trips you want to take, it’s a no-brainer to be able to travel comfortably plus it is a great spot on the AA award chart.

CX economy is not bad. You can suck it up in economy.
If you don’t have any high aspirational uses for those AA miles, using them makes sense since it is CX. Their product is damn good.
I dont know much about using miles to upgrade. That should be an option to consider too.

Thanks guys. I took the plunge – outbound in biz. Coming back will be in coach. That’s going to be a huge difference in experience in 24 hours 😉

If they’ll reimburse you the $1k, I would upgrade myself on the trip back too.

Even if you didn’t want to use your American miles (though I would, given the risk of devaluation), you can straight-up buy enough miles for CX F for ~$1300 right now, so might as well!

Thanks, Tiff. Good reminder about the potential devaluation – might as well use it when I can. Don’t see any seats available coming back any more (unfortunately). Oh well, hopefully, something will open up (still have a few days before the trip).
