I used to book LAX-BKK, SFO-SIN, or BKK-LAX where one of the legs does not have a first class cabin (e.g. NRT-BKK or NRT-SIN). However you could book at a higher miles level for First class (75K miles) where the LAX-NRT or NRT-LAX leg is in first class and the other leg is in Business class. I’ve been doing this for years. Recently I noticed they don’t show you this option even though space is available in First. Is this a routing glitch in their system or intentional? I’ve called the Mileage desk and they have no clue.
Are they able to book it over the phone?
This is a problem that’s plagued Japan Airlines awards from the US to Asia, and even to the US to Japan to Australia when using AA miles. What I’d recommend doing is booking the US-Japan segment in first class and calling to add the other segment in business class. It will take a special desk to do this. When the first agent tries to do it the US-Japan segment tends to downgrade to business class (if available). They’ll have to store the new mileage requirement + taxes manually and will re-issue the ticket. Hope this helps! \
